Fresh produce in grocery stores travels an average of 1,500 miles before being consumed. This is an alarming fact and one that has serious consequences both for our environment and for the nutritional quality of the food we are eating!
Mehdi from Linwood Community Garden in Temple Terrace talks about their Dwarf Cavendish bananas and all the benefits of these bananas which include fiber, potassium, and vitamins B6 and C 🍌 Once you’ve eaten truly FRESH food you won’t want to go back!

Our first “Ask Kitty” question came from Sheryl at Mustard Seed Garden in Lutz who asked if her and her garden members could schedule a visit to Tampa Heights Community Garden. There is no better education than sharing knowledge and learning what other community gardens are doing!
That being said, everyone is welcome to join, THIS Wednesday the 24th at 9:00 am at 605 E Francis, Tampa 33602. (Yes, we realize the video said 8:30 😹)
Stay tuned for future outtakes and feel free to ask Kitty YOUR central Florida gardening related question in the comments! 🥦🥕🌺

COCG and Healthy 22nd Street Garden were honored to host Nina Bhattacharyya from USDA and Kayla Caselli from City of Tampa’s Sustainability & Resilience program in late June! We shared how Healthy 22nd Street was formed, the huge impacts it’s had on the community, and the future plans for the garden as a part of the USDA grant! Below are a few things in the works…
-Relocating garden to a more permanent location (still working with the City to determine where!)
-Expanding garden into a garden park for the entire community
-Becoming a garden hub and market with locally grown produce sales and educational workshops
-Replicating this model at our second location in West Tampa (stay tuned for more details!)
Nina promised she would come back and visit to see our progress and we invite all of you to do the same! Comment below if you have any questions about Healthy 22nd Street or the USDA grant!
And p.s - @healthy22nd hosts a FREE educational workshop the third Saturday of every month. Follow them for updates and more info!

Meet the other co-founder of The Coalition, the myth, the magic, the legend…KITTY WALLACE.
Prior to COCG being founded in 2015, only six of the 12 community gardens in Hillsborough County made it past the three-year mark, a survival rate of only 50%. Fast forward to 2024, and COCG has grown from six gardens to over 60 with nearly a 100% survival rate. This never would have been possible without her!
A few fun facts about Kitty:
• Her favorite vegetable is broccoli 🥦
• She plays the flute, clarinet, trumpet, guitar, and also made a dulcimer at the John C Campbell folk school.
• She has a wicked sense of humor 😄
• When she’s not gardening you can find her “wiping dirt off her feet” (her 3rd favorite activity) and hanging out with her seven grandchildren (her favorite activity).
• At any given time she has seeds in her pocket, a shovel in her car, and is ready to help! 🧑🏼🌾💪🏻
COCG is excited to announce the “Ask Kitty” series to help share her wealth of knowledge with our community! Comment below with your Central Florida gardening question or feel free to share your favorite Kitty story!
